What Are the Primary Causes of Motorcycle Accidents, And How to Avoid Them?

Take a look at the statistics of overall accidents happening across the nation and you will find that two-wheeler riders are at the top of the list of road accidents. While there are several reasons behind accidents, there are some that are common ones across the board not just in India but also worldwide and these reasons have more to do with the human errors rather than anything else. So, these are easily remedied as well! With that in mind, we have collected a few of the primary causes of motorcycle accidents and how you can avoid them going forward.

Not using the riding safety gears

It’s quite baffling that many two-wheeler riders do not even use riding safety gears while riding! This is perhaps the most easily remedied mistake behind motorcycle accidents. If you do not want to spend money on anything else, at least invest in a good motorcycle helmet and a pair of gloves which will protect your head and hands in the event of an accident. Injuries to the head are usually the ones that become fatal later on, therefore always make sure to use a good quality branded motorcycle helmet at all times irrespective of how far you are traveling or what you are riding: motorcycle or scooty.

Failure to use turn signals

The second most common reason behind accidents involving motorcyclists is that they fail to indicate their turns and lane changes. Never make the mistake of suddenly changing lanes or turning into an exit without signaling it first very clearly and for at least a reasonable amount of time for other people behind you to see your intentions and slowing down to let you pass by.  If you suddenly jump in front of a vehicle to take a turn, there is a very good chance that the driver might be distracted with his or her mobile phone or something else and fail to apply the brakes! If that happens the one that will be in most pain will be you! That is why be safe, always use turn signals in the dark, and hand signals during the day along with the signals just to be extra safe.

Riding on the wrong side of the road

Writing on the wrong side of the road is one of the most common traffic violations in India that leads to accidents involving motorcycle riders.  Many people do this to avoid taking a longer route thereby endangering not just themselves, but also other motorcycle riders on the correct side of the road because they have to make way for people approaching from the wrong direction! This puts them directly in the path of vehicles behind them which, more often than not, leads to an accident. In many cases, vehicles on the correct side of the road do not anticipate traffic approaching from the wrong direction which leads to high-speed head-on collisions which usually becomes fatal for the two-wheeler rider. Don't take any shortcut that cuts your life short! Make sure to follow all traffic rules and regulations and write on the correct side of the road at all times.

Speeding

It is very important to know the limitations of both yourself as the rider and your machine to ride safely on the roads. It is common with youngsters to ride at extremely high speed which makes it a challenge for them to bring the vehicle to a safe stop because of an unforeseen emergency condition. While the motorcycle helmet does a lot to save the rider from being gravely injured, it cannot possibly protect the entire body from injuries. Even with complete body armor, the risks of injuries cannot be completely negated especially when riding on a road with bigger vehicles plying at high speeds. There is a reason why speed limit signs are put up because that is the safest speed at which you can ride without endangering other people or yourself.

Riding under influence

Riding a two-wheeler under the influence of alcohol dulls the brain and slows down the response mechanism which significantly increases the risk of an accident. Avoid drinking before going on a motorcycle ride.
