The Secret of Managing Long Hair Under A Helmet: 5 Practical Tips

Call it the lockdown hairstyle, or the biker hairstyle–long hair is quite common among biker dudes and gals! And all of them have one problem in common: managing their long hair under the helmet! Get a good fitting helmet

The first and most common mistake long-haired people make is that they do not get a good fitting helmet primarily because they do not consider the girth of their head including the hair. Whenever you are in the market for a new motorcycle helmet, make sure to measure the circumference of your forehead using a tailor’s tape and get a helmet that is the closest match to your measurement. If you intend to keep long hair, it might be a good idea to include that into the measurement as well, but we strongly recommend you to measure the head at its most normal condition to ensure that the helmet fits well even when you do not have long hair later on.  

Wear the hair tight

Let the hair hang, or to tie it up in a bun: that is a question many longhead bikers often contemplate. Based on our own experiences, tying the hair up tightly in a bun hanging just below the helmet is the best idea especially if you are a female rider with really long hair. For most dudes with long hair, letting it hang or tucking it inside the helmet does not really make a huge difference.  

Balaclavas, headscarves and skullcaps

Modern motorcycle helmets are made to fit the head snugly, which means if you have really long hair the tight fit after helmet might make you uncomfortable especially on long rides. A good way to avoid that problem is by wearing a balaclava, head scarf, or skullcap whichever feels more comfortable to you. Keep the hair moisturized (not wet!)

A good way to keep the long hair managed inside the helmet yes by keeping it moisturized because dry hair has a higher tendency of snapping and breaking off easily. Make sure that you are keeping the hair moisturized with a good hair product, rather than making it wet with water.

Consider trimming the hair!

Last but not the least, result final recommendation that probably many long-haired motorcyclists would not like – nevertheless it is the most practical. Consider trimming your hair, because there is nothing more troublesome done having to tuck and shove long hair under the helmet before every ride.
