Overcoming Travel Anxiety: 7 Practical Tips to Worry Less and Enjoy More!

Does travelling make you anxious? Well, it is one of the most common problems faced by travelers all around the world. Dealing with travel jitters it is one of those important things that you need to learn in order to enjoy your trips more. Here are 7 practical tips followed by frequent travelers, and we are sure these will help you deal with your anxiety as well. Let's get started.

Avoid the triggers

The simplest technique to avoid traveling it is to get rid of the triggers. For example, many people start feeling access as soon as they smell the coffee in the morning before beginning the trap. Smells, sites, psychological factors are all triggers that open the floodgates to anxiety! If you already know of such things that make you anxious, try to avoid them at least 72 hours before the trip. In fact, we recommend that you make a list of all of these anxiety triggers and try to put them as much as possible. However, don't get too hung up on the fact that you have to avoid those triggers because the psychological pressure of doing something will again make you anxious! The key to staying cool and enjoying the trip is to ignore everything else and just focus on all the fun and good experiences you are about to have.

Stop overplanning

Planning is good, but overplanning is not! The more you get into the tiny details of things, the more anxious you will become. It is not a bad idea to keep a few things for the last moment and know in your heart that there is a solution for everything. You might not have the solution right away, but there is one! It is futile to look for a solution to every imaginary problem that you think you will face during the trip. If there is something that is bugging your mind a lot, share the problem with your travel partner or a trusted friend and try to find out the solution for it. But in case a logically viable solution is not apparent to you at the moment, stop thinking about it because the solution will definitely come up when you need it.

Share your anxiety with others

A good way to deal with travel anxiety it is to share them with others. Discuss the upcoming trip with a friend or family member and talk of any aspect that comes to your mind. You don’t have to specific about anything. Generally, talking about a topic usually allows the mind to evaluate the situation and find solutions to seemingly difficult problems. As soon as you start discussing a problem, your mind starts to brainstorm answers for the questions that you had a little while ago. If it helps, note down the anxieties that you are having regarding the upcoming travel in a notepad and revisit it after a couple of hours and you will find the solutions yourself.

Solve the common causes of anxiety

What are the things that make you anxious? Like we mentioned in the first step, it is important to identify the triggers leading to your anxiety. As soon as you do that, try to solve as many of them as possible. For example, if you are anxious about being lost at the destination, purchase a map of the location. Another way to solve this problem is to download an offline map of the location in your Google Maps application! Similarly, if you are worried about running out of money during the trip, make sure to have 30% extra as emergency funds and stash that cash away in secure nooks in your luggage that you can always use to get out of tricky situations.

Listen to soothing music

Doing a little bit of yoga, meditation or listening to soothing music can help a lot to deal with anxiety. This is particularly important just moments before you are about to embark on the journey. If you are travelling by air, arrive early at the airport and meditate for 10 to 15 minutes at the airport. If you are travelling by motorcycle, consider investing in a branded motorcycle helmet that lets you use a pair of headphones to listen to music. A word of caution here, do not make the mistake of listening to music very loudly while you're riding because that can significantly reduce your situational awareness.

Ditch anxiety-causing foods 72 hours before the trip

Consuming caffeine, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, soda, or artificially sweetened fruit juices before travelling is a bad idea, especially if you are prone to become anxious easily. Change your diet at least 72 hours before beginning the trip. Focus on natural meals without adding a lot of sugar or salt, and keep your food just mildly spiced which will aid digestion and keep the bowels clear.

Always stay positive

Last but not the least, never let your mind become flooded with negative thoughts because once you get into that negative mindset, there's no coming back! Instead of focusing on the negative things that ‘could’ happen, focus on the positive things that ‘are’ happening. If something is making you anxious, immediately switch your mind off that topic and focus on something good that has happened recently. This will give your mind the impetus it needs to find a solution for the problem.
