There are many situations when motorcyclists stop using their two-wheelers and take a different mode of transportation for an extended period of time. This is when the riding gears stay unused and unattended, and become prone to damage. Thankfully, that can be easily avoided by following a few simple steps. Branded motorcycle helmets are not very cheap to come by, and that is why you need to take all possible care to keep it safe when not in use. Check out these tips to store helmets safely.
Wash and wax
Before storing the helmet away for an extended period of non-use, make sure to take apart all the removable parts of the helmet and store it safely in a corrugated box, or a plastic bin. What's all removable parts are done, soak the helmet in warm water mixed with a little bit of baby shampoo, or helmet washing product that you can easily purchase at any motorcycle accessories shop near you. Allow the helmet to soak in the solution for a little bit and then wash it under running tap water. Finally, buff it with a soft cotton cloth, you can also use a little bit of polishing wax to give it a good shine.
Store properly
Failing to store the helmet properly can lead to the deposition of mild you another unwanted substances on it over a period of time. To prevent that from happening, always make sure that you are storing the helmet high above the ground ideally on top of a cabinet, or in a proper rack in your garage and use helmet security guard. Keep it away from the reach of wild animals, pets and small children. Do not place helmet on any surface that you anticipate to become moist or wet at any point of time.
Get a padded helmet bag or hook
If you do not have to bank, or box that helmet came in new, you can always purchase a separate padded helmet bag to store the helmet when it is not in use. Another way of keeping the helmet stored properly is to use helmet hanging hooks, which can also double up as hooks for your motorcycle riding jackets and pants. If purchasing a new helmet bag seems like unnecessary investment at this point of time, you can also use old backpacks for the same purpose.
Keep it away from heat and moisture
Last but not least, double check that you are not putting the helmet away in a better moist place, definitely not under direct sunlight. Over a period of time excess heat and moisture can damage the structural integrity of the helmet, as well as the inner lining and padding, rendering it completely useless later on. Like we said earlier, the best place to keep your helmet is high up from the ground, possibly on top of a cabinet, or hanging by a hook.
