All set for your winter vacation ride? A big hassle of travelling during the winter is packing winter apparels, which are very bulky and refuse to go inside the luggage bags without a little fight! Not to worry, we have a list of practical tips that will help you pack everything you need and focus on enjoying the trip rather than hauling a huge load everywhere.
It starts with the right bag
The secret to packing the bags properly starts with the bag itself! Will you be traveling alone? Or will you be accompanying somebody? Depending on the amount of clothes that has to go inside the motorcycle luggage boxes, you need to plan the space accordingly and segregate whatever you have available to you, which unfortunately isn't a lot. Have you considered investing in a motorcycle top box? These are usually a lot larger than side luggage boxes, and can carry almost twice as much a single side bag. Besides that, you are also going to need a backpack on your shoulders for the essentials that you need in a jiffy. Make the smart decision and invest in the proper bags before you head out for the trip.
Take only what’s essential
Don't pack anything that you are not going to use regularly during the trip. For example, if you have a favorite jacket, that might not be as useful or practical for riding a motorcycle but you want to carry it with you anyways, leave it back at home! Don't be emotional while packing your bags, rather focus on practicality. If you need only one pair of thermal-wear, take only one and leave everything else. This becomes even more important if you have a pillion rider accompanying you, which means you will have to share the luggage space with another person.
Wear what’s heavy, pack what’s light
Instead of putting heavy things in the luggage bags, consider wearing them on your body when you start the ride. This way you don't have to stuff the luggage boxes with large objects. In most cases, the large objects are motorcycle riding jackets, and winter jackets which are really unwieldy and difficult to pack.
Choosing smartly
Choose things that have the ability to solve multiple problems. For example, if you are planning to camp at the destination, carry utensils that serves the double purpose of letting you cook on it, and eat on it as well. Reduce clutter in your bag by eliminating everything that Does not serve a specific purpose for you.
Recycle every 5 days
When it comes to packing the right amount of cloth in the motorcycle luggage boxes, it is generally a good idea to pack for 5 days, and then recycle everything all over again, which gives you a period of 10 days to enjoy your vacation without washing any clothes! In special circumstances when the temperature increases suddenly and makes you sweat, keep the dirty underwear separately in a bag and place it in the corner of the motorcycle luggage box and wash them whenever you end the day’s ride. a good way to keep everything clean is to cover it with a good quality motorcycle riding jacket and riding pants.
Layers Vs. Bulk
In order to minimize the bulk while packing winter clothes, pack as many thin thermal clothes that you can layer one over another rather than packing large fur coats and jackets. This way you can keep the overall bulk of the baggage low, as well as smartly maintain the core body temperature by layering thermal clothes, and removing them as the ambient temperature rises.
Separate large objects
All large-sized objects such as riding boots, camera gear, spare motorcycle helmets and motorcycle riding gears, camping and cooking equipment (if you are considering the option of Camping under the open skies) – should go separately in a different luggage box, ideally in a top box at the back of the motorcycle. It is a common sight for people to pack large things on top of the pillion seat with bungee cords and nets, which in some places is considered a violation of the road safety laws. Also, there is a very good chance that having unsecured weight on the pillion seat can disbalance the motorcycle on a tricky terrain. Instead of doing that, consider investing in a top box for large-sized objects that you plan to carry during the trip.
