5 Tips to Make Yourself More Visible to Others on The Road

Riding a two-wheeler is arguably not as safe as driving a car, but that should not keep you from enjoying the joys of motorcycling! Ask any experienced motorcyclist, and they will tell you that staying visible on the road can make a huge difference in ensuring your safety on the roads. We have compiled 5 of the most practical tips these experience riders use to make themselves clearly visible to other motorists under all lighting conditions.

Wear brightly colored riding gears

The most practical and simplest tip is to where brightly colored riding gears. When you are considering to purchase a new branded motorcycle helmet make sure to check out brightly colored options that are clearly visible from afar, giving other motorists a clear idea of your presence, which will help them avoid tailgating or hitting you. It is also a good idea to wear brightly colored motorcycle riding jackets, especially in neon green or neon orange colors which have higher visibility even in the dark.

Add auxiliary lights

Installing auxiliary lights on the motorcycle is a rather controversial subject. It is quite easy to go overboard with auxiliary lights and install more lights than what is necessary to stay safe. Too many lights on the motorcycle will not only drain the batteries very fast, but it can also be quite distracting to other motorists, which will eventually jeopardize your safety. Make sensible upgrades to the lighting infrastructure on your motorcycle, taking care not to be too garish with unnecessary additions. Subtly bright lights on the number plate, and removable long-throw lights on the front should be enough to ascertain your visibility as well as to tackle dimly lit highways in rural areas if you love going on long distance trips frequently. Make sure that you are not violating any local laws by installing auxiliary lights on your motorcycle.

Use reflective tapes

Reflective tapes, in red, orange, white or neon green colors are great options to make yourself visible to other motorists especially while riding in the dark. Many experience motorcyclists use reflective tapes on the rims of their motorcycle wheels as well as on the sides for additional safety. There is also a trend of attaching reflective tape from the helmet especially on the rear side of the helmet, which might be a good idea as long as it does not cover the safety certification information on the helmet.

Use the high beam more frequently

While making an overtaking maneuver, always make sure to use the high beam on your motorcycle to flash your intentions to the vehicle in front of you so that they can let you pass easily. Flashing the high beam is also a good idea to ask oncoming motorists to lower their high beam if it is directly incident on your eyes. whenever you are riding in a city, or a densely populated traffic condition, never use the high beam because it can cause problems to oncoming traffic and they might inadvertently hit you.

Avoid blind spots

Always keep away from the blind spot of other vehicles in front of you. Just so you know, the blind spot is directly above the rear wheels of a vehicle, where everything is invisible to the driver. Nowadays, most modern vehicles come with blind spot monitoring, but even then, you should not make the mistake of making yourself vulnerable by being in anyone’s blind spot. This is especially important while riding in dark conditions, because the vehicle in front of you can suddenly swerve and change lanes which is the last thing you want!
