Wearing a branded motorcycle helmet is not just mandatory by law, it also protects you against the dangers on the road! Unfortunately, many people belittle the need to wear a branded motorcycle helmet because they are confused by baseless myths associated with these life-saving accessories. Let's demystify 7 of the most common ones.
Helmets are only for professional riders
Many people wrongly think that branded premium motorcycle helmets are only made for professional usage. In reality, anybody with a two-wheeler must use good quality branded motorcycle helmet to protect the head in the event of an accident. Granted, that there are specifically designed helmets made to be used by professional results in a race track, but even those helmets can be used on the road by anybody.
Helmets are optional for short rides
Every two-wheeler rider must use a proper branded helmet irrespective of the distance he or she intends to ride. It's quite common to see people riding without helmets because they think that making a grocery run is not dangerous! In reality, nobody can predict with any degree of certainty when and how accidents may happen. The only thing we as motorcycle riders can do is to protect ourselves from even the most minute possibility of an accident by wearing branded motorcycle helmets. So, never make the mistake of thinking that wearing a helmet is optional for short distance errand runs or dashing to the mall for groceries!
Women and pillion riders don’t need helmets
A worrying number of women and pillion riders never wear helmets! The risk of injuring oneself in an accident is equally present for both the rider as well as a pillion seated behind a rider. In India, and in many other South East Asian countries women and pillion riders do not use a helmet either because of stylistic reasons, or because they do not think that helmets are essential for them. The other reason women don't wear helmets is because they do not know that nowadays the best helmet manufacturers in India are coming out with specially designed helmets for women and kids.
Helmets aren’t available in kids’ sizes
They anatomy of a child is more delicate compared to that of an adult, which makes it even more important for them to be protected with proper branded helmets when they're accompanying you to their schools, or sports classes. It is quite rare to see a child wearing a helmet because parents are not aware of the fact that there are specially designed helmets for children as well. If you use a two-wheeler to help your child reach school, make sure that you are protecting them with the right safety gears at all times.
Wearing the strap is not always necessary
If the helmet fits properly on the head, there isn't any need to tie the strap! This is one of the most ridiculous myth many people subscribe to. In reality, in the event of an accident the physical impact can dislodge and throw the helmet out of your head leaving it exposed to the hard surface of the road. The helmet cannot protect you unless it is properly strapped down.
Only full-face helmets are safe
Open face helmet, modular helmet, three-quarter helmet, half face helmet – there are several configuration options when it comes to choosing the best helmet for your riding requirements. However, many people think that only full-face helmets are safe! You must know that all of these helmets that are certified by the relevant authority in your country (ISI in India, DOT in America and ECE in the European Union) are all equally safe irrespective of the configuration they come in. If you are more comfortable using an open face helmet, or if a modular helmet matches your riding style and personality more – definitely go with it! Full face helmets have just one thing that the others don't, which is superior weather protection because it provides complete coverage to the head and face which might be more beneficial if you ride exclusively in cold conditions.
Safety Certifications Don’t Matter
Non-certified helmets are comparatively cheaper than certified branded helmets but in reality, they do not hold any value! Any helmet that has not been rigorously tested for safety and protection it is nothing but a plastic shell meant to fool the police! Branded helmets that are certified by relevant safety authorities in your country pass through rigorous testing against all possibilities of an injury which means you are getting the assurance of quality and protection which you can’t expect from non-certified helmets.
